A Letter Mailed to 50 State Governors
17 July 2025
Dear Sir or Madam,
Today, I wrote and mailed an open letter to our nation’s President, Donald J. Trump, concerning his role in music. My letter is posted on my website which is www.27humanright.org.
Music represents Freedom Of Speech in its entirety. There is, therefore, no room whatsoever for interference in music by a government official. However, the “Music Modernization Act” from 2018 is a 67-page law and it attempts to revoke copyright protection in the music industry for the financial benefit of streaming companies. You might remember when streaming took off in 2016, and then there were complaints by the general public, and then everything was silenced in 2018.
With the MMA, over 1000 serious copyright infringement lawsuits against streaming companies have been swept away. The MMA restricts regular practice of law, too. It does this by diverting artists who complain away from the courts and instead only to the United States Copyright Office for their adjudication. This stops the right to a fair trial and puts the staff of the Copyright Office under attack.
This Music Modernization Act from 2018 has been such a massive alteration of Constitutional Right to copyright protection, as well as the right to a fair trial, that every owner of every musical recording in the country has so far been terribly abused by it. Billions of dollars from artists’ income have been stolen from these people. Make no mistake, residents and businesses of Alabama who are invested in music are also being stolen from by the people who succeeded with the MMA.
The MMA was not ever set before the people of America to vote upon. That’s the worse condemnation of all.
We hear much in the media today about the ruthless approach taken by government officials. This message puts everybody at risk. I believe the root of this problem is the Music Modernization Act. This is such a terrible abuse and millions of people have been hurt.
Please, help me today by signing the attached petition to end the MMA.
Sincerely,
Corinne Devin Sullivan
One American.
